Introduction:

This course looks at all of the major groups of living things. It explains how these life forms are related to each other. Biology 11 also examines the impact that these organisms have upon the environment, as well as human health and the economy.
There is NO Provincial Exam for Biology 11.

Recommended prerequisites:

Recent completion of Science 10 would be helpful for a Biology 11 student. However, the most important skill that one needs to have is the ability to read at a high school level. This is not a difficult course, but there is a considerable amount of reading.

Resources:

Biology (textbook) and the Biology Laboratory Manual are required. Miller and Levine are the authors of these books. Students are expected to supply themselves with the traditional school supplies, such as paper, pens, pencils, tape, glue and crayons.
You MUST have access to the internet.

Evaluation:

You will be graded according to this formula:

  • Tests (60%)
  • Labs (20%)
  • Assignments (20%)
Assignments and Labs

It is STRONGLY recommended that assignments and lab reports should be turned in within one week of their posted dates. For example, an assignment from Week #4 should be submitted no later than the end of Week #5.

Midterm

There is NO midterm for this course. Instead there are six unit tests. The tests cover the following units:

  1. DNA and Evolution
  2. Viruses, Bacteria & Human Health
  3. Protists & Fungi
  4. Plants
  5. Animals – 1st Test
  6. Animals – 2nd Test

On the main webpage of the course, you will find at the end of each unit a “Notice” for the unit test. By clicking on this notice item, you will be able to see a detailed review for the unit test. This will help you to prepare for the test.

Final

There is NO Final Exam for this course. The unit tests act as ‘finals’ for each unit of Biology 11.

Student Responsibilities

Students are expected to log onto the course and submit one assignment (or have contact with the instructor) each week. Students who do not log onto the course, or keep in contact with their instructor on a weekly basis, will be viewed as having withdrawn from the online course.

The instructor will then notify them that they are being withdrawn from the course. Students who withdraw from an online course are not allowed by Ministry of Education regulations to retake the same online course for two reporting periods.
